Shortstown along with the rest of the country celebrated this event.

Fancy Dress Coronation 1953 2nd June

Shown here are photographs of a Fancy Dress Party held in Shortstown on June 2nd 1953. These images taken from Bedford & Luton archives BP Box 4850* show a party held to celebrate the Queen's Coronation in June 1953.

The captions all read 'Shortstown Fancy Dress Party' although it is unclear where it was held. Does anybody recognise these individuals? And the room the party was held in? It was possibly held in the RAW Social Club as there was no school or village hall at that time. Can anybody confirm this?

*Thanks must go again to John Day of Ampthillimges.com who has collated all these photographs.

Sept 2012 update - We have been very fortunate to hear from Tasha Wensley who used to live in Shortstown and can shed a little light on these photographs.

"Hi my name is Tasha Wensley I used to live in Shortstown and my grandparents lived in North Drive as my gramps Mr Reg Cresser was based on the camp. I remember the snow in the 70's and sleighing in the camp. Also Mr Evans, (the school headmaster) he was a friend of my grandparents as were many on the camp. I remember refugees from Vietnam. Any info on Mr Evans would be appreciated I know he has been gone for many years but he at the time was my hero next to my grandad. I remember the small hut where the park was, now houses are on the plot but we had Brownies there and playgroup with milk in bottles. Also the NAAFI and huts behind there.

Tasha continues " You mention the Jubilee - I came second place in the dress competition and my friend at the time Tara was dressed in a Union Jack and she won! It was an amazing time of my life I loved it very much and would love any information found on the past as it brings back so many happy memories. I am pleased that my tree I used to climb is still up, amazingly they stopped knocking them down in the park."

Thank you so much Tasha for sharing your memories with us.
